Help Rehabilitate People affected by Cyclone Gaja

Muthamizh Sangam of Central Florida (MSCF) requests contributions that will be managed by the MSCF Charity arm in co-ordination MSCF members and trusted volunteers on the ground in the affected areas. We are taking utmost care to make sure 100% of the funds collected are used to provide help directly to affected areas.

We would like to thank all the donors who have contributed to this cause so far. We raised $3521 for this cause. We will continue to keep this page updated with progress on the rehabilitation efforts.

We have completed the fundraising at 10pm EST on Dec 02, 2018

On Nov 16, Cyclone Gaja made landfall in the east coast of Tamil Nadu causing severe damages to properties and livelihood of thousands of families. Immediate rescue and relief efforts were arranged by the state govt, volunteers and NGOs. Apart from immediate relief, the affected families are in need of long-term help to regain their livelihood. Livelihood of most of the people were based on livestock, coconut trees, mango trees and cashewnut trees. Most of these trees were more than 10-15 years old and were in peak productivity.

From MSCF, we reached out volunteers and people hailing from the affected areas to find out how we could help in the long-term recovery. We were able to identify few coastal villages near Vedharanyam that took the first hit from the cyclone.  We are continuing to assess the long-term help needed for the affected people and determine how to help them.

We have identified Pushpavanam village near Vedharanyam to offer our help to rebuild. We have also identified a trusted volunteer from the village with whom we will co-ordinate our rehabilitation efforts. Please watch below video from Pushpavanam that shows what the people have gone through.

Livelihood of most of the people in Pushpavanam were based on livestock, coconut trees, mango trees and cashewnut trees. Most of these trees were more than 10-15 years old and were in peak productivity and more than 70% of them were lost in the cyclone.

With the funds we raise in MSCF, we will partner with trusted volunteers and local youth groups of Pushpavanam village and offer following help.

  • Help replant fallen trees
  • Buy and distribute new saplings
  • Help rebuild house (based on funds)
  • Financial loan for initial crop sowing (based on funds)

Your kindness will go a long way in helping farmers and farm workers to get back on their feet and care for their families. MSCF is striving to make sure every dollar we collect is put to use and directly benefit the affected village with absolute minimum or no overhead at all.

Thanks
